Weekly Wrap up! May 7th

Well what a week! The world of an animal advocates life goes a little like this....

On Monday here in my town the story broke of a woman who was breeding Polish Arabian horses. This seems ok as long as it is monitored. This was NOT a monitored situation. Horses were not being fed, watered groomed or vetted. The Humane Society here had been watching this location for a very long time. They knew it was time to move it and with the help of two rescues and the HSUS they made their move. In a two day seizure they took 133 horses. This does not include the ones that had to be put down do to poor health. I do know this past Friday there was a meeting to discuss what will be the outcome. I will talk to the States Attorney on Monday.

Tuesday was a prep day for my speech on animal abuse and awareness of the lack of laws. Wednesday was a great day with the people of University of Maryland. I was welcomed and I felt as though this was an enlightening speech.

Thursday was time to drive up to Newark for the trial on Friday. Now during all of these days between twitter and Facebook there were several abuse stories that broke. Halfton (I renamed him Freedom) was big story. The saddest thing other then the abuse was the lack of care the authorities gave this wonderful dog. A great person took pictures of the crime and went to Facebook in hopes of help. She got it! Between Facebook and twitter we were not going to allow this dog to stay with the abuser any longer.

In Baltimore the two brothers that doused a pitbull and lit her on fire (Phoenix) had their trial postponed until July...Uggg

Several dogs were dumped on the highway in California and it was a gruesome scene. Reward is offered in the arrest of the people who did this as well..

So there I am 2am not being able to sleep in anticipation of the trial and rally a few hours later. After about a 40 minutes doze I was in the shower and ready to take on the world (Happens with me A LOT). My good friend Kay and I arrived to find wonderful people there with great signs and determined faces. There were 5 of us who spoke. All of the speakers of course were AWESOME. The reading of the dog's prayer made me blubber and I was thankful the live feed being broadcasted around the world by Victor didn't pick that up! Then there she was (Keisha Curtis) with her burger and fries shirt on the way into court. My blood pressure was boiling but as we all know in order to be heard we have to conduct ourselves in a professional manner as to be heard. About 20 minutes later we found out she had plead not guilty. I have to say I was ready to go home and try to sort this all out. I can't imagine what goes through an abusers mind that they think their actions are acceptable. I think for many they were treated harshly in their lives so this seems normal. Does it make it right? No!!! So now we wait for the Grand Jury to decide where we go from here. We have to keep focus of the big picture...We must continue to write our letters not just in this case but to make these law changes.

I wasn't home 15 minutes and heard that a man in a town about an hour away had 95 dogs removed from his home. One was dead and another had to be put to sleep. That was a bit much after only 45 minutes of sleep.

Then I see our latest puppy that is 4 months old that was tied to a board with wire and chains and thrown into a lake. What makes me and others like me keep going?? If we don't keep going who will be the ones to help these animals. Many think that one person does not make a difference. I refuse to believe that and I know that if I work with other people with the same goal we will all make that difference....We are growing in our twitter goal of 1 million follower against animal abuse and for tougher laws @Patricksmovment . We will continue to grow. We are now at just over 915 and I couldn't be happier. I do know that we have thousands that are against animal abuse. For many they don't tweet. It takes two seconds to make a profile and follow us for what we all believe. It is difficult when you see singer that have 8,000,000 followers for being a good singer and we are battling to gain our followers. I am so thankful for all that are with us and hope that next week in our weekly follow up I can report additional followers.

Keith Stoeckler teamed up with Dog Files and Tonic.com and managed to get over 8,000 that support stronger laws. Lets hope we get the same response.

Sadly this was not a "busy" week for an animal abuse advocate but a rather normal one....That is very sad.. We HAVE to change this. We just HAVE to...

Thanks again to everyone that continues to support what we do and who are a part of it. xoxox woof woof.....Lori
